Holidays can be a tricky time of year when it comes to staying healthy. At New Life Hiking Spa & Wellness Retreat, we are closed for the season, but are working on planning for next season and enjoy giving your updates on wellness and healthy living during the winter months. Here are three quick and easy tips you can use to keep yourself on track:
1. Eat seasonal
Choosing foods grown as close to you as possible is a great way to maximize your health and improve the environment. When we eat food that is grown locally, it is fresher, so it contains higher levels of nutrients. In the winter months in New England, this is a bit more difficult to do, but root vegetables are usually still plentiful at co-ops and local indoor farmer’s markets.
2. Eat more immunity-boosting foods
Many fruits and vegetables can help boost your immune system including antioxidant-rich blueberries and vitamin C-rich citrus, broccoli, and spinach. Radishes and onions are also natural cough expectorants, and tomatoes and garlic can help fight infections. It’s easier to find organic frozen berries in the winter months. Buy a few bags to stock your freezer for smoothies.
3. Incorporate short, high-intensity exercise into your day
It’s a fact…life is busier this time of year. Exercise has been shown to improve energy levels and reduce stress. Even short bouts of exercise, when performed at a high intensity, can help increase energy and lower stress. So even when you’re short on time, go for a quick walk or choose another way to get your heart rate up.
Enjoy the winter months, get your sleep and before you know it, spring will be here! New Life Hiking Spa opens on May 16th for the 2019 season.
